More than 80,000 runners in one year

The millionth starter is expected to run in this year

SC Charlottenburg`s Berlin runs are booming as never before. For the first time, in 2000 more than 80,000 people registered for a total of 16 different events within one year. The exact number was 81,240, which of course also included wheelchair participants and inline skaters in the appropriate races. Such an increase within one year could not be foreseen, and SCC Berlin is expected to congratulate their millionth starter at this year`s BERLIN-MARATHON. Since Horst Milde and the organisers arranged the first run at Teufelsberg in 1964, 938,999 registrations have been recorded in 303 events. However, so far there are no plans for what awaits the millionth registration. The organisers are concentrating first on the next big event, the BERLIN HALFMARATHON on 1st April. Neither this race, nor the AVON Women`s Run or the City Night have reached the same dimensions and international reputation as the BERLIN-MARATHON, but it was these three runs which last year showed tremendous growth and led to the record total number of more than 80,000 registrations. And all three are the largest of their kind in Germany.

The number of participants in the BERLIN HALFMARATHON - including the Fun-Run - increased by a sensational 70%. Now the organisers are hoping that for the first time there will be over 10,000 registrations for this year`s run on 1st April. And that would mean that the BERLIN HALFMARATHON is well on the way to becoming the perfect complement to the BERLIN-MARATHON.

The AVON Women`s Run had for many years difficulty in developing, with between 1000 and 2000 registrations. But in the year 2000, a growth rate of 20% meant that for the first time there were more than 5,000 participants. With AVON`s help this women`s race has now become a real `Happening` in the Tiergarten district of Berlin. And SCC Berlin is hoping that there will be around 7,000 runners at this year`s race on 26th May. If this happens, the event would slowly become one of international importance.

For the impressive City-Night on the famous Kurfürstendamm the organisers are expecting about 20% more registrations than last time. In last year`s run there were more than 5,000 runners and skaters for the first time; it could be 6,000 on 4th August. But the main event of the year will of course be the BERLIN-MARATHON on 30th September. Last year there were roughly 34,000 participants. This time the organisers are hoping it will be 35,000.
