real,- BERLIN-MARTHON Race Director Horst Milde and German Agro Action Chairwoman Ingeborg Schäuble sign agreement

SCC-RUNNING, organizer of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, and German Agro Action (Deutsche Welthungerhilfe) have entered into a charity partnership. The agreement was signed by Race Director Horst Milde and the Chairwoman of German Agro Action, Ingeborg Schäuble, in Berlin. The partnership seeks to “send a collective signal for life and against hunger, for the Olympic ideals of fairness and international understanding, and for the fellowship of all human beings – in Germany and worldwide.”

On September 29th, the participants of the 29th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON will run under the common motto “UNITED WE RUN FOR LIFE.” For their athletic commitment, they are asking for donations and sponsoring to benefit a project of German Agro Action in Afghanistan that has been specially chosen for the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON. The ‘Berlin project’ seeks to rebuild the water supply system and to expand basic health education in the long fought-over provinces of Jalalabad and Mazir-i-Sharif. The project particularly aims to improve the situation of women and children in these regions.

The last remaining start numbers for the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON 2002 will be handed out as charity numbers at the symbolic price of 200 Euro to benefit the ‘Berlin project.’ Prominent athletes and public personalities, like Tegla Loroupe, have committed themselves to supporting the Afghanistan project of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, to sponsoring the teams of the real,- MINI-MARATHON, and to promoting the charity partnership of SCC-RUNNING and German Agro Action.

The charity partnership is calling upon the participants of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON 2002 to find sponsors who honor their kilometers with donations or to pay a charity entry fee.

An experienced organizer of internationally renowned running events, the SCC is organizing 18 races with 100.000 expected participants in 2002 alone. The real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, taking place for the 29th time, is the most prominent of these.

Founded in 1996 in co-operation with the German Track and Field Association (Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband), German Agro Action’s Aktion LebensLäufe works to encourage social commitment in the arena of sport. Each year, the Aktion LebensLäufe mobilizes 60.000 people to participate in more than 200 events throughout the Federal Republic. Moreover, German Agro Action’s longstanding co-operation with the Berlin School Board (Landesschulamt) makes for an excellent starting-point for the charity partnership.

The charity partnership between the SCC and German Agro Action offers participants of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON the opportunity to combine their athletic ambitions with a social commitment by supporting the collective ‘Berlin project’ in Afghanistan.
