Running, shopping, and culture in Berlin

2004-05-06

Germany’s largest women’s race will take place on Saturday, May 22 in Berlin. Last year, 10,528 women and girls from 44 countries took place in this event in the Tiergarten Park. Again this year, an increase in participation is expected. The event organizer, SCC RUNNING, has already received over 6,000 registrations. This means a probable participa-tion of over 11,000 women and girls. Many of the runners from the outskirts of Berlin — and many from abroad — combine the practical and fun elements of their trips. They come to Berlin - the hotels are relatively inexpensive — and combine running in the attractive Tiergarten Park in the heart of Berlin — with shopping, as well as the diverse cultural life in Berlin, or enjoy the night life and club action. Early registration ends on Wednesday, May 5. After that, the registration fee goes up. Registration is still possible from May 19-21 at KarstadtSport in Joachimstaler Straße 5-6 and on the day of the event on May 22 in the start and finish area, as long as the limit has not already been reached.

Two more weeks of preparatory training

The countdown has started — in two weeks the starting shot will be given for Germany’s largest women’s race. For over four months, female athletes, young and old, have been training regularly in the Tiergarten Park for the women’s race. Every Saturday at 5 p.m., SCC RUNNING, under the leadership of Dr. Detlef Kuhlmann and together with adidas and KarstadtSport, has been offering free guided training for women in preparation of the women’s race. The meeting place is on John-Foster-Dulles-Allee, near the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

Athletic women and girls, and all those who want to become so, still have two weeks until the starting shot on Saturday, May 22, 2004 to train under professional guidance.

As last year, the start and finish will again be on the Straße des 17. Juni, between the Siegessäule (Victory Column) and the Brandenburg Gate, near the Kleiner Stern. This is where the first 645 women started at the first of the series of women’s races on Fathers Day in 1984. The course will be changed slightly to reduce the number of women getting lapped and thus reduce the hindrances.
