Göteborg Half Marathon, 15th May 2004

2004-06-01

The 25rd Göteborg Half Marathon was held on the 15th of May with the maximum allowed number of entries: 36,000 from 30 different nations, running in good weather conditions (bright sun, 15-16° C, but a rather strong wind) and approximately 150,000 spectators along the race course through the city centre of Göteborg.

The men’s race was very exciting with a group of ten running together for the first 10 km. Former winner Pavel Loskutov and the Olympic champion (1992 10000m) Khalid Skah was mostly seen at the front. After about 14 km the reigning European marathon champion, Janne Holmen of Finland made a decisive move and was only followed by the Swede Mustafa Mohamed (winner of the 2002 race).

The pair ran together until 19 km where Mustafa raised the pace further and managed to create a margin that grew to about 50 meters at the finish line. He was greeted by thunderous applause at the classic Slottsskogsvallen Arena where the mens mile record has been broken four times during the decades.

The two kenyan runners Leah Kiprono and Jemima Jelagat dominated the womens race. The only one to follow their pace was the local girl, Christin Johansson. With a couple of kilometres left she had to let the Kenyan pair go. Leah Kiprono was slightly stronger at the end and managed to create a five seconds margin at the finish line.
