IAAF.org: Ndereba wins Osaka Marathon

2006-01-29

World and Olympic silver medallist Catherine Ndereba of Kenya cruised to victory this morning in the Osaka International Women's Marathon. Ndereba, 33, who last year won the Boston Marathon for the fourth time, clocked a time of 2:25:05, which was 47 seconds ahead of Japan's Kayoko Obata. Another 'local' Kiyoko Shimamura, was third in 2:26:47.

Ndereba, the 2003 World champion and African record holder (2:18:47 - 2001), was competing in her first full marathon in Japan, though she has run plenty of shorter distances in Japan including winning the three of the last four Sapporo Half Marathons. Most recently, she was second in the Sanyo Women’s Half Marathon on 23 December 2005, clocking 1:11:13.
